A new batch of young women have just started training to become multi-purpose health workers at the women's shelter Gora Abhay Nivas in Vijayawada. HAMU funds the residential shelter and related activities but not the MPWHtraining itself. Several doctors in the city give free instruction in addition to offering practical placements at their clinic. In return, they can take their pick of the newly educated healthworkers once they graduate. The women also receive training in tailoring and embroidery two afternoons per week so that they will have a wider range of skills to fall back on once they leave the shelter.
